Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Education Secretary ArneDuncan and Senior Adviser to President Obama Valerie Jarrettpraised the efforts of the student-run credit union at StonewallJackson High School for fostering financial literacy.

In an op-ed on The Huffington Post, www.huffingtonpost.com, theypraised teacher Terri Carson as an "important model," for whatother schools should do.

They noted that Carson helps students run the branch of theApple Federal Credit Union in the high school in Manassas, Va. highschool and that 100 of her students took the National FinancialCapability Challenge, an educational program and assessmentexamination. Over half of Carson's students scored in the top 20%nationally and 17 had perfect scores.

The administration officials wrote the piece in conjunction withApril's designation as Financial Literacy Month.

Yesterday, the NCUA, CUNA and NAFCU participated in the annualfinancial literacy celebration on Capitol Hill, which featured aroom filled with providers of financial services and their tradeassociations and regulators.

At the event, Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) praised credit unions andchurches for promoting financial literacy "before it wasfashionable."

Today, NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz discussed the importance offinancial literacy and credit unions during a visit to T.C.Williams High School in Alexandria and praised the efforts of theschool's branch of Commonwealth One Federal Credit Union.
