Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Senior Adviser to President Obama Valerie Jarrett praised the efforts of the student-run credit union at Stonewall Jackson High School for fostering financial literacy.

In an op-ed on The Huffington Post, www.huffingtonpost.com, they praised teacher Terri Carson as an "important model," for what other schools should do.

They noted that Carson helps students run the branch of the Apple Federal Credit Union in the high school in Manassas, Va. high school and that 100 of her students took the National Financial Capability Challenge, an educational program and assessment examination. Over half of Carson's students scored in the top 20% nationally and 17 had perfect scores.

The administration officials wrote the piece in conjunction with April's designation as Financial Literacy Month.

Yesterday, the NCUA, CUNA and NAFCU participated in the annual financial literacy celebration on Capitol Hill, which featured a room filled with providers of financial services and their trade associations and regulators.

At the event, Sen. Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) praised credit unions and churches for promoting financial literacy "before it was fashionable."

Today, NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz discussed the importance of financial literacy and credit unions during a visit to T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria and praised the efforts of the school's branch of Commonwealth One Federal Credit Union.
