Washington State may have its first new credit union in seven years to be located on one of Seattle's commuter islands in the Puget Sound.
The proposed CU Vashon, to open next January, is being chartered by members of a CU marketing firm on Vashon Island and would serve a population of 10,000, officials said.
Organizing CU Vashon is Blonde Ambition, a consulting firm headed by Amy Herbig, former head of marketing at Group Health CU of Seattle.

"We understand the NCUA requires capital of $200,000-$300,000 and we first have to get the 500 feasibility names on the prospectus," said Herbig, a job being started now and slated for completion in June.
The last new charter in Washington State was in 2003 by the $2.3 million Tulip Cooperative CU of Olympia.
Herbig said the plan for a CU has been on the drawing boards for months with the proposed CU serving a population of both full time residents and summer visitors on a property accessible only by ferry or airplane.
