In 1990 John McKechnie was director of political action at CUNA. Today he is director of the NCUA's office of public and congressional affairs.

"In 1990-91, Washington was trying to deal with the aftermath of the S&L crisis, and I recall the credit union industry having to make an effort to get their voices heard on Capitol Hill," McKechnie said in a recent interview. "Issues relating to regulatory consolidation, powers and authorities, and legislation to prevent future problems were all in the forefront, in a way that is reminiscent of the current debates."
