A North Carolina charity supporting injured Iraqi and Afghanistan war vets is $15,000 richer this week thanks to a credit union fundraiser featuring a Saturday bike ride across the backwoods hill country near Winston-Salem.
Sponsors of the Hope for the Warriors ride, the Northwest Chapter of the North Carolina Credit Union League, were elated over the outpouring of support from CUs, their employees and volunteers who joined in the trip. It numbered 50 bikers and started in Lewisville on jaunts up to 50-60 miles.
There were more than 100 separate donors with Allegacy FCU of Winston Salem coordinating arrangements, signups and marketing. Weather for the ride cooperated during the day starting out cool but later climbing into the 70′s "and there was not a hitch to the event," said a league spokesman.

League officials said the next step in the "Hope for the Warriors" benefit will be to raise more contributions from other chapters across the state and make plans for another bike ride in June in which CU participants will visit all five major military bases in eastern North Carolina. The ride will end at Camp Lejeune where a check will be presented to Hope for the Warriors.
