Power Financial Credit Union, Pembroke Pines, Fla., announced its sponsorship of the Wings Over Homestead Air Show. The two-day event which took place at the Homestead Air Reserve Base returned after being blasted by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union, Harrisburg, Pa., announced its sponsorships of the local Jefferson Awards. The awards were founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard to formally recognize those who dedicate themselves to community and public service.
Advance Financial Federal Credit Union, Schererville, Ind., held a combination shred day/food drive. The event welcomed people to protect themselves from the risk of identity theft, while donating canned food items to the credit union's annual food drive for the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.
San Mateo Credit Union, Redwood City, Calif., joined Sharp Business Systems and the San Francisco 49ers to collect donations of outerwear for One Warm Coat at two Candlestick Park stadium drives. Game attendees contributed a total of 828 coats, adding to the 200 coats previously collected by the credit union's branches. Furthering the success of the coat drive, monetary donations at both games totaled more than $4,800.
Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union, Aberdeen, Md., hosted a free shred-it day at its Aberdeen, Edgewood, Elkton and Laurel Bush branches. Attracting over 250 member-owners, the event shredded and recycled over 25,000 pounds of paper, the equivalent of saving nearly 130 trees.
United Teletech Financial, Red Bank, N.J., announced its sponsorship of the fifth annual Red Kettle Classic Basketball Tournament, held at the Salvation Army Jane H. Booker Community Center. Game participants received complimentary tournament T-shirts, goody bags, participant certificates and possible selection to the coveted all-tournament team made up of game MVPs.
NuMark Credit Union, Joliet, Ill., joined with Laraway Elementary School for family reading night. The school hosts the biannual event, in an effort to encourage families to become involved in student learning. Parents were invited to come to school with their children in the evening to attend a book fair, interact with teachers, and participate in events that will assist their children with learning. The credit union helped enhance the experience for three lucky students with three book fair gift certificates totaling $50.
CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union, Alexandria, Va., hosted two financial literacy events. One partnered with the Virginia Cooperative Extension to host a “reality store” in Alexandria at Francis C. Hammond Middle School. A “real life” event was also hosted on James Madison University campus in conjunction with the Students for Minority Outreach program. More than 300 middle and high school students combined participated in the events. The programs are a part of the credit union's ongoing effort to teach students about personal finance.
Shell Federal Credit Union, Deer Park, Texas, announced that members of its Furthering Community Unity Team attended the dedication ceremony of the second house completed since the team partnered with the Pasadena Habitat for Humanity. The residence was presented to a young couple and their two children. The credit union partnered with Gallery Furniture to present the new homeowners with a $3,000 house warming gift certificate to help make their house a home.
GFA Federal Credit Union, Gardner Mass., announced that it served as a toy collection site to benefit children in need. Each of the credit union's branches collected toys to be distributed through local service organizations and will go to children in the local community.
Numerica Credit Union, Spokane, Wash., formed 14 teams, with 69 bowlers, to participate in a “Bowl for Kids' Sake” fundraiser. The annual event benefits Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Spokane. Team Numerica raised a total of $11,000 to help the organization.
Great Lakes Credit Union, North Chicago, Ill., held its first annual all-staff community volunteer day at the 17th annual “Kids 1st Health Fair” at Miguel Juarez Middle School in Waukegan. The credit union closed its branches early and 120 employees and board members held staff volunteer positions throughout the day. Additionally, the credit union contributed monetarily toward the free back packs given to all the kids, handed out free water to families waiting outside in the long lines and held a raffle. The lucky winner received a family pack of tickets to Six Flags, donated by Six Flags.
