World Council of Credit Unions is reporting at least one creditunion in Malawi was destroyed in December earthquakes that leftthree dead, more than 80 hospitalized and some 300,000 homeless inthe country. The most recent earthquake, struck on Dec. 20 andmeasured 6.0 on the Richter scale according to the U.S. GeologicalSurvey.

The affected credit union, or SACCO, serves Karonga districtteachers. Its main office suffered structural damage that willrequire extensive repair, and a branch office some 20 miles closerto the earthquake's epicenter was completely destroyed.

WOCCU Board Member and Malawi Union of Savings & CreditCooperatives CEO Sylvester Kadzola said he has heard unpleasantstories that earthquake victims are being asked to pay money ifthey want to be assisted quickly.

In a release, WOCCU said it will help MUSCCO provide aiddirectly to the SACCO and its members this weekend. No formalfundraising efforts will be undertaken, but WOCCU is acceptingdonations at www.woccu.org/give in support of Malawi's rebuildingefforts.
