Shell Federal Credit Union has teamed up with Sam Rayburn High School to launch an Ambassador program designed to encourage community involvement among students. The Deer Park, Texas-based credit union currently has a student run branch at the high school and the pilot program was created to inspire participants to live life with a greater passion for social responsibility. "Sam Rayburn High School students work to be the best at whatever they do. The Ambassador Program only strengthens our ability to instill in them a sense of placing service above self," said SRHS Principal Robert Stock. To be accepted into the program, students complete an application, submit three teacher recommendations and must be interviewed by faculty and credit union advisors. Students are expected to be leaders, a positive role model and have charisma to encourage others to volunteer for a stronger community. In 2008, Shell FCU formed the Furthering Community Unity and plans are underway to increase volunteering with this team through the Ambassador Program. FCU Team events occur several times a month and have included walks, Habitat for Humanity, blood drives, bowl-athons, and street cleanups. Volunteer opportunities will be offered to the students several times a month through the FCU Team. Each Ambassador is required to volunteer at least four hours a month and attend short monthly meetings throughout the school year to discuss upcoming events and promotion to support program participation. Successful Ambassadors will volunteer a minimum of 30 hours per school year regardless of when they join the organization.
