Texans Credit Union, Dallas, raised more than $50,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at the organization's Walk to Cure Diabetes. The event drew over 15,000 walkers in three locations and has raised $1.5 million to date. The credit union raised money by employees asking friends and family for donations, selling vendor logo space on their team T-shirts, selling jeans days and offering
raffle prizes of Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars, Dallas Mavericks tickets and a week of vacation.
1st Advantage Federal Credit Union, Yorktown, Va., donated a refrigerator to the Salvation Army in Hampton, Va. When the credit union's Community Outreach Team heard the local chapter of the Salvation Army was in need of additional refrigeration for donated items, it was eager to help. The donation also contributed to a broader effort by the Salvation Army to increase food access for the hungry.
Charter Oak Federal Credit Union, Groton, Conn., raised nearly $4,000 for the American Heart Association through its "Walk to Hawaii" challenge. The credit union's community giving program challenged staff to walk the distance to Hawaii (5,782 miles) during their lunch breaks and free time. Donating 50 cents for every mile walked, the credit union's program helped employees raise over $1,800 in addition to the funds raised by individuals and in-branch paper heart sales.
AltaOne Federal Credit Union, Kern River Valley, Calif., donated $1,075 to Kern Valley Aquatics Program with help from its member service center and members. The funds were raised through the credit union's skip-a-payment program. Qualified members could skip a loan or Visa payment for a $29 fee. A portion of that fee was then donated to a selected charity in each member service center's geographic area.

Georgia Federal Credit Union, Duluth, Ga., held its annual statewide paint ball tournament to benefit the Credit Union Political Action Committee. Tournament participants and corporate sponsors donated funds to help the committee raise several thousand dollars. This year's tournament consisted of 14 teams with 98 participants.
Tampa Bay Area Credit Unions for Kids, Tampa, Fla., hosted its fifth annual kids classic golf tournament, culminating a five-year campaign to raise $1.5 million for the new pediatric intensive care unit at All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., opening in December. The new unit will provide expanded pediatric treatment, education and research for the Bay Area community.
MAX Credit Union, Prattville, Ala., held a golf clinic and raised over $42,500 through golf sponsorships and mulligan sales. The tournament hosted by the credit union's MAX4Kids Foundation featured LPGA Hall of Famer Pat Bradley and was designed for young girls ages 8-12 who wanted to learn more about the game of golf. Twenty girls participated in the clinic, including a local Girl Scout troop, earning their merit badges for athletics.
State Employees' Credit Union, Raleigh, N.C., pledged $500,000 to the Vital Connections Capital Campaign for expansion of the Hospice and Palliative CareCenter in Winston-Salem, N.C. The credit union's members made the pledge via the SECU Foundation. The funds will be used to add a palliative care clinic and a new 10-bed wing to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union, Aberdeen, Md., raised $1,078 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County at its flapjack fundraiser. Guests enjoyed unlimited pancakes and beverages served by credit union employees and young members of the Boys & Girls Clubs. All net proceeds from the breakfast were donated to support the clubs' mission of enabling all young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
California Credit Union League, Vallejo, Calif., raised more than $36,000 for Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland and UC Davis Children's Hospital through its Mt. Diablo, San Francisco, North Bay and Wine Country chapters. The third annual golf tournament was held at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo. The event also included breakfast, and a post-game dinner and awards presentation.
