Consumer prices increased 0.2% last month, the Labor Department reported today.
Prices have increased during four of the past five months. In August, the Consumer Price Index increased 0.4%. During the past 12 months, prices fell 1.3%.
Excluding food and energy costs, the CPI increased 0.2% in September, compared with 0.1% in August. That index increased 1.5% in the past year.

Energy prices rose 0.6%, down from a 4.6% increase in August. Those prices have fallen 21.6% in the past year.
Food prices increased fell 0.1% in September after increasing 0.1% in August. They have fallen 0.2% in the last year.
Housing prices were unchanged, following a 0.1% increase in August. Those prices increased 0.7% in the past year.
Prices for medical care services increased 0.4%, following a 0.2% increase in August. Those prices have increased 3.3% in the last year.
