With Colorado's Rocky Mountains as a backdrop, the CUNA leadership climaxed the movement's year-long 100th anniversary celebrations with an all-day ceremony described as "both moving and emotional" to mark CUNA's founding 75 years ago.
Complete with speech making, picture taking and a cookout, the 75th founding commemoration ceremonies took place on a YMCA field in Estes Park as more than 150 credit union CEOs plus the NCUA and state league leaders assembled to recall history-making events in the chartering of CUNA.
"For me it was an unforgettable day and one that allowed all of us to reflect on all that credit unions have accomplished," said Dan Mica, president/CEO quipping sadly "now I think maybe I should stay on since I have to miss this very special kind of event."

Mica was referring to his previously announced planned retirement from the CUNA helm in January 2011.
One surprise during the Estes Park event, which also included a special meeting of the CUNA Board, was the discovery of an unknown 1954 speech made by the late CU pioneer Roy Bergengren. Portions of the speech and his notes were read by Kathy Peletier, the Berlin, N.H. granddaughter of Bergengren. Also on hand for speeches were Bill and Catherine Herring, the son and daughter of early CU organizer Louise Herring.
As part of the proceedings, special messages of congratulations were sent to CUNA by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D. Calif.) and by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. (D. Nev.)
