In Texas, compliance has gone to the dogs, so to speak.
The Texas Credit Union League said this week it will bring two dog "celebrities," Riley, a Yorkie and Chuy, a Chihuahua, to appear and "autograph" postcards at the league's annual Leadership Conference & Expo Sept. 10 in San Antonio to promote compliance services.
The two dogs plus a third, Dorey, a Dobie mix have been starring for months in a set of compliance hounds cartoons distributed to members on various topics such as red flags, the Bank Secrecy Act and "the proper etiquette when meeting with an examiner."

All of the cartoons "have tongue firmly planted in cheek," said the league, also noting the cartoons represent a creative way of drawing attention to important issues.
"Compliance tends to be fairly dry, so we were looking for something unique and humorous," said Suzanne Yashewski, vice president of the regulatory and compliance department. "People tend to skim over compliance news because it doesn't have a big entertainment factor, so we wanted something that would get them engaged, even if it was for a laugh."
There's evidence that the promotion is working. "We had someone ask to sign up for the Compliance Hounds newsletter," said Yashewski, noting that the name of the compliance newsletter is actually called InfoSight. "It looks like the hounds are starting to earn their kibble around here."
