Retail sales increased a bit last month, but are still down from where they were at the same time last year.

Retail sales increased 0.6% in June but were 9% below June 2008. From April to June, retail sales were down 9.6% from the same period last year.

Total retail and food sales in June were $342.1 billion, compared with $339.9 billion in May.

June's numbers showed a 0.3% increase in non-automobile sales, but that number represented a 7.9% drop from June 2008.

There was a 2.3% increase in automobile sales from May and a 14.1% decline from June 2008.

Gasoline stations had a 5% increase in sales last month; electronics, food and grocery stores saw an increase of 0.2% and appliance stores as well as hobby, gift and bookstores saw sales increase 0.9%.

Other sectors saw declines, including department stores, 1.3%; health/personal care, 0.3%; and restaurants and bars, 0.9%.
