Pope Benedict XVI called for a new economic order that incorporates a "profoundly new way of understanding business enterprise."
In an encyclical issued on the eve of a summit of the leaders of the most powerful nations, Benedict urged more emphasis on helping the poor and respecting the rights and dignity of workers.
"The economy needs ethics in order to function correctly-not any ethics, but an ethics which is people centered," he wrote.
