With an eye on the state's 14.1% unemployment rate, the $1 billion Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union said last week its program to aid adult workers in finding new jobs "has more significance than ever."
"We are honored to be able to award our members who are trying to move forward in their careers," explained Peter Gates, president/CEO. "Whether a member is changing positions, or their job is changing, or they are just returning to the workforce; Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union is here to help."
As noted in national statistics, the state now has the highest unemployment rate in the U.S., which means, "Our program of providing scholarships is now more meaningful," said a CU spokeswoman.
The 62,000-member Michigan Schools is offering $2,000 scholarships under its "Adults Moving Forward" program through which it gives out nonrenewable stipends to adults or college students registered at a Michigan college, university or vocational school or undergoing accredited certification.

The scholarships are being offered in addition to other educational scholarship programs totaling close to $50,000.
