The work ethic at $708 million Goldenwest Credit Union of Ogden, Utah has come in for high honors this month from a state agency, a development underscoring the CU's emphasis on holding the line on staff cutbacks.

Acknowledgement of Goldenwest's policies came in the form of a 2009 "Work/Life Award" from the Utah Department of Workforce Services. Goldenwest won "Utah's Best Place to Work" in the category of medium-sized businesses with 50-500 employees.

More than 200 Utah firms were judged on how conducive their corporate culture and workplace philosophies were to keeping "a healthy balance regarding work and personal life issues."

Commenting on the award, Goldenwest's president/CEO, Shelley B. Clarke, said the CU "employs the hardest working and most dedicated people in the state of Utah." And, she said, during the financial crisis, "

Goldenwest has not cut staff, reduced hours, or cut benefits to our employees."

"All employees continue to be eligible for annual pay increases based on individual and team performance," she said in a statement, adding, "We have continued our traditions of sponsoring charitable events and holding holiday celebrations."

Clarke noted that unlike Goldenwest, "Several organizations in our market, both inside and outside financial services, have cut staff, hours, and all sorts of benefits due to the sluggish economy."
