In another sign that the economy is still causing consumers to be wary, sales of new homes fell 0.6% last month, the Commerce Department reported today.

The numbers from May-a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 342,000-were 32.8% below those of May 2008.

In April, sales were at an adjusted annual rate of 344,000.

The median sales price of new houses sold in May was $221,600, compared with $209,700 in April. The average sales price was $274,300, compared with $254,000 in April.

New home sales increased from their April levels in the Northeast, Midwest and West, by 28.6%, 18.6% and 1.3%, respectively and fell 8.5% in the South.

The year-to-year sales figures declined in all four regions: 12.9% in the Northeast, 32% in the Midwest, 35.9% in the South and 31% in the West.
