Card issuing credit unions and banks might take a small measure of comfort from the news that Heartland Payment Systems will return to Visa USA's list of firms compliant with the industry's data security standards on May 4.

The firm claimed to have completed its annual Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard assessment and that it validated the firm's compliance. Compliance with PCI DSS has been criticized as offering only a "snapshot" of a firm's security situation, but Visa and other card brands have continued to defend it.

"As such, Heartland is returning to Visa's List of PCI DSS Validated Service Providers. According to Visa, Heartland will appear on the list-which can be found at www.visa.com/cisp-on Monday, May 4," the firm said.

Visa USA acknowledged Heartland's accomplishment but a version of the PCI DSS compliant list on Visa's site early on May 4 did not list the firm.

Heartland revealed that it suffered what has been widely considered the largest breach of card data security in history in January 2009.
