The ongoing cutback on travel and conference expense took another victim this week. The Marketing Association of Credit Unions said it is canceling its annual San Antonio convention next month and replacing it with online programming.

"Like many other industry groups, we are forced to postpone our live conference for a year in the interest of our brand, our members and our vendor supporters," said Darlene Kindelberger, MAC chair and also vice president-marketing at Kern FCU, Bakersfield, Calif.

"This was a tough decision for us and one unprecedented," she added.

The conference, which usually draws 175 and was slated for the Grand Hyatt in San Antonio May 27-29, had seen a near 60% drop-off in advance registrations, said Kent Lindeman, executive director of MAC in Indianapolis.

"This is a major bummer for us but keep in mind we will be doing three days of virtual seminars allowing members to still receive important educational content including those top ad campaigns and competition winners," said Lindeman.

Kindelberger said the MAC Board felt the decision to cancel was both "responsible and prudent" in light of economic conditions impacting CUs. The conference will resume in 2010 in Palm Springs, Calif.
