WASHINGTON — With no Republican support, the House today gave final approval to a $787 billion economic stimulus bill.
The measure passed 246-183, and the Senate is expected to vote on it later today.
The bill includes spending increases and tax cuts designed to jump-start the economy, which has been in a recession since December 2007. Seven Democrats opposed the measure.
"There is a great deal of apprehension in our country about our economy. . . . What we need now, though, is not fear; it's confidence," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said when speaking in favor of the bill.
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he favored taking action but he opposed this measure because a "bill that was supposed to be about jobs, jobs, jobs has turned into a bill that's all about spending, spending, spending."
If the Senate passes the measure, President Obama is expected to sign it next week.
