WASHINGTON – Sales of new homes fell 14.7% in December and were 44.8% below the levels of December 2007, the Commerce Department reported today.
Sales of new homes were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 331,000, which projects what the rate would have been had sales been at that level all year. By contrast, the rate for November 2008 was 407,000 new homes sold, compared with 419,000 in October…
The median price for a new home was $206,500, compared with $220,400 in November.

December's new home sales increased from their November levels in all four regions: The highest drop was 28.2% in the Northeast, 20.2% in the West, 12.1% in the South and 5% in the Midwest.
The year-to-year sales figures declined in all four regions: 50% in Northeast, 47.4% in the West, 46% in the South and 31.1% in the Midwest.
