PRINCETON, N.J. — Heartland Payment Systems still does not know how many debit and credit card account numbers were compromised when its security was breached in 2008.

The company just doesn't know yet how many card numbers might have been compromised, said Heartland spokesman Jason Maloni. "Any numbers that have been published so far are purely speculative," he added.

"This was very sophisticated piece of malicious software that unfortunately made it past our firewall," he said.

Maloni said Heartland had been certified as compliant with the card payments data security standard in April of 2008, but that Visa had currently indicated its compliance was under review. The company did not yet know how long the hacker software had been on its system either, he added.

"The important thing to note is that no really important data was lost," Maloni said. Important data in the company's view included confidential merchant data, Social Security numbers, unencrypted personal identification numbers, addresses or telephone numbers.
