CHICAGO — The Illinois Attorney General has alleged that seven individuals working at a Wal-Mart in Crestwood Illinois have been involved in fraudulent card scheme involving stealing credit card numbers and then encoding them onto gift cards.
|Some of the stolen credit card numbers have come from the $68 million Illinois State Police Federal Credit Union, along with Wachovia Bank, Fifth Third Bank and Wells Fargo. No one from the credit union has become available to comment on the case.
|If accurate, the allegations suggest a novel card theft strategy where stolen card numbers have been used to not just fraudulently purchase goods or gift cards but have instead been encoded onto merchant issued gift cards which have then been used in fraudulent purchases. According to the charges, the ring rang up more than $140,000 in fraudulent charges.
