Christian Community Credit Union, San Dimas, Calif., participated in Operation Christmas Child for the second year in a row. Operation Christmas Child is a program of Samaritan's Purse International Relief organization and brings holiday joy to children around the world through gift-filed shoeboxes. The credit union staff donated 154 shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, hygiene items, clothing and more.

San Antonio Federal Credit Union, San Antonio, invited members, employees and the public to donate canned yams or sweet potatoes to use in the 29th annual Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Day dinner. Employees donated time to help prepare food, serve meals and clean up on Thanksgiving Day. Raul Jimenez, a local restaurateur, started the event in 1979 when he realized that many seniors had no place to go for Thanksgiving dinner. More than 4,000 volunteers provided approximately 25,000 meals on Thanksgiving Day.

US Federal Credit Union, Burnsville, Minn., employees volunteered at the Northfield Armory packing meals for Feed My Starving Children, a nonprofit organization committed to feeding starving children around the world. Over the course of three days, 12 credit union employees joined more than 700 volunteers to help package 171,072 meals consisting of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and vegetarian chicken flavoring. The Feed My Starving Children initiative will feed about 500 children for one year. The event also brought in over $26,000 from individuals and businesses to help defray the cost of the meals. A single bag of food provides meals for six children and costs approximately $1 to produce.

Freedom Federal Credit Union, Bel Air, Md., announced that all four of its branch locations have been acting as donation drop-off points for the Empty Stocking Fund. The credit union has been collecting food, toys and monetary donations to aid the less fortunate in Harford County. The credit union has also contributed $2,300 to the campaign this year through its sponsorship of the fund's annual golf outing. Freedom employees also chose to participate by wearing jeans on Fridays when they make a weekly contribution to the fund. The Empty Stocking Fund is a nonprofit organization, coordinated by employees of Homestead Publishing Co. to provide funds for food, clothing, housing, utilities, medicine and toys to families in need throughout the year.

GTE Federal Credit Union
, Tampa, Fla., employees raised $600 to buy 64 turkeys to help out a local food bank in need. Branch Representative Richelle Farrar heard that Johnny Roberson, director of the Mercy Keepers Food Pantry was concerned that the organization would not have enough turkeys to give needy families on Thanksgiving due to the fact that donations have not kept in pace with the growing demand for services. Farrar coordinated with employees to raise the funds and donate 16 boxes of turkeys and one box of canned goods to the food bank.

FedChoice Federal Credit Union, Washington, adopted two local Prince Georges County, Md. Families to support in conjunction with the adopt-a-family program. The program helps those that are less fortunate to experience the traditions of the holiday season. FedChoice employees brought in nonperishable food items and contributed over $300 to ensure that each family received all the fixing for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Woodstone Credit Union, Federal Way, Wash., announced extended its food drive through the month of December to help families in need during the holiday season. Woodstone started collecting nonperishable food items and cash donations for the Multi-Service Center Food Bank in October as part of International Credit Union Week. Recognizing the increasing number of families now relying on the food bank for help, Woodstone extended the donation campaign.

Redstone Federal Credit Union, Huntsville, Ala., co-sponsored the WAFF 48 Heart of the Valley Can-A-Thon. The credit union's branches located in Limestone, Morgan, Madison, Jackson and Marshall counties in Alabama and its branch location in Lincoln County, Tenn., all served as drop-off locations for the event. All of the canned food items collected at the credit union's Madison County branches will go to Christmas Charities Year Around. Redstone has sponsored the event and offered its branches as drop-off locations for more than seven years. The WAFF 48 Heart of the Valley Can-A-Thon has collected more than 2.8 million cans since 1992.
