WASHINGTON — There were 509,000 first-time filings for unemployment insurance last week, a 21,000 decline from the week before, the Labor Department reported today.

But the department also said that the number of those filling claims for more than a week was at its highest rate in almost 26 years.

During the same week last year, there were 340,000 first-time filings.

The four-week average of first-time claims was 524,500, an increase from 518,250 last week.

The largest increases in new claims were in California, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana and Missouri. The biggest declines were in Nebraska, Utah, the Virgin Islands and North Dakota.

Tomorrow the department is scheduled to release unemployment data for November.
