Capital Communications Federal Credit Union, Albany, N.Y., along with its Capital Communications Cares Foundation awarded $32,500 in scholarships. The credit union honored 10 members with the Weidner Davis scholarship, named for a former board member. The credit union also honored members with the Harold Horning scholarship for children of credit union employees. Horning is a current member for the board and past President/CEO of Capital Communications. Recipients of the Weidner Davis scholarship are Jeremy Abel, Niskayuna, N.Y.; Kylie Bissell, Ballston Spa, N.Y.; Elizabeth Burke, Schenectady, N.Y.; Nick Colaneri, Buskirk, N.Y.; Kevin Conti, Cohoes, N.Y.; Eve Huska, Rensselaer, N.Y.; Mackenzie Keane, Albany, N.Y.; Adrian Mitchell, Niskayuna, N.Y.; Timothy VanEpps, Schenectady, N.Y. and Ryan Wineinger, Winston-Salem, N.C.
Recipients of the Harold Horning scholarship were Brendan Franko, Latham, N.Y.; Jessica Longo, Schenectady, N.Y. and Benjamin Kelly, Schenectady, N.Y. Applicants for both scholarship programs were required to write a 500-word essay in response to the question: "Many issues facing young adults today get a lot of attention in the media. What is the biggest issue facing young adults today that does not get the attention it should?"
Travis Credit Union, Vacaville, Calif., awarded 20 California high school students the Mary Keith Duff memorial scholarship. Each recipient was presented a $1,000 scholarship to help them with college expenses. The students also received a scholarship certificate, a certificate of special congressional recognition, a California State Assembly certificate of recognition, a small gift and complementary photos. The Travis CU Board of Directors established the scholarship program in 2004 and named it the Mary Keith Duff memorial scholarship in honor a long-time board member who passed away in Dec. 2004.

Service Federal Credit Union, Muskegon, Mich., established the Calvin J. Peterson memorial scholarship in Jan. 2008 in memory of the credit union's former president. The two recipients of the awards were Trevor Beck and Djon-Iva Santos. Beck attends Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. Santos is now in her third year as a psychology major at the University of South Alabama.
Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union, Germantown, Md., announced the winners of its Charles W. Thomas scholarship program. Formerly known as the young executive students and next wave scholarship contest, the Charles W. Thomas scholarship program is named in honor of recently retired CEO/president of 32 years. The winners were Teresa Ingraham and Elizabeth Roberts, who both received a $2,000 scholarship for their entries on essay topics: What financial lesson have you learned so far in your college career? What advice would you give a younger friend or sibling? and What does credit mean to you?
E1 Financial Credit Union, Monterey Park, Calif., awarded a total of $4,250 to five high school students and three college students. The students received their scholarships based on scholastic achievement, volunteerism, employment history and community leadership.
Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union, Westbury, N.Y., announced that Caitlin O'Neill was the recipient of the NEFCU 2008 making a difference premier scholarship award. O'Neill was the first student to win the award and will receive a $20,000 college scholarship paid over four years. O'Neill attends Dartmouth College and is studying to become a teacher.
Clearview Federal Credit Union, Moon Township, Pa., announced the winners of its 2008 Ralph B. Canterbury scholarship. Each winner was awarded a $1,250 scholarship. The recipients were Amanda Hall, Jessica Hoffman, Jessica Pattyn, Alexandra Tipton, Joetta Herrmann, Theodore Roman, Julianna Brown, Leah Foerster, Luke Secosky and Jillian Turner. This was the 9th annual Ralph B. Canterbury scholarship. The scholarship is in honor of Ralph B. Canterbury's service and loyalty to the credit union during his 34-year tenure. Applicants were judged based on a number of criteria, including academic performance, community involvement, a statement of personal goals and an essay on "Why I chose to belong to Clearview."
Century Federal Credit Union, Cleveland, Ohio, announced the recipients of the 9th annual Guy Thorpe memorial scholarship. The recipients were Lena Newman and Douglas Astler. Each received a $1,500 scholarship. Newman attends Barnard College in New York City. Astler is studying Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland.
Tower Federal Credit Union, Laurel, Md., announced that members Amanda Jo Mezei, Teresa Foeckler and Thomas Riordon were three of the 10 recipients of the annual essay scholarship program sponsored by the Credit Union Foundation of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Of the 200 entries submitted to this year's program, Tower had the most entries from its young adult members. Each member received a $1,000 scholarship.
