SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — Criminals in Australia have struck upon a novel method of robbing ATMs: blow them up, according to news accounts.

Most of the attempts to use explosives on ATMs have failed to yield the stored cash, the accounts said, but enough have succeeded to keep the new attack method continuing, the accounts said. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that only one out of a series of four recent explosive attacks on ATMs succeeded.

According to press accounts, thieves favor using gas which they pump into the machines and then ignite. Police have been reluctant to share the exact approach the thieves use for fear of encouraging others to try.
