WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski has cut four points off of his opponent's lead but trails by five points, according to a poll released today by Franklin & Marshall College.

Kanjorski (D-Pa.), one of the credit union movement's biggest allies in Congress, is facing a spirited challenge from Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta in the heavily Democratic 11th District, which encompasses much of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Barletta leads 40%-25%, with 24% undecided, according to the survey of 586 registered voters.

In a poll taken last month, Barletta was ahead by nine points.

The district is heavily Democrat and Democratic nominee Barack Obama leads GOP nominee by nine percentage points, according to the poll.

Kanjorski leads among those who consider the economy the most important issue, Catholics and those earning less than $35,000 per-year. Barletta leads among whites, males, and those earning more than $75,000 annually.

As in September's survey, only 35% of respondents said Kanjorski deserves to be reelected.

The loss of Kanjorski, the No. 2 Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, would be a major setback for credit unions. He has been the main sponsor of all of the measures providing regulatory relief to credit unions in the last few years.

He is one of only a handful of Democratic incumbents considered in danger of losing.
