Affinity Federal Credit Union, Basking Ridge, N.J., awarded six high school students with scholarship grants. The grants were funded through the Affinity Federal Credit Union Fun, a 501(c) (3) charity corporation. To qualify for the grant students had to be a member of the credit union, excel academically, show commitment to the community, participate in extracurricular activities and an essay. The recipients were Thabo D'Anjou, Jessica DePrima, Keiona Eady, Crystal Himes, Andy Yuan-Jay Lee and Brian Thorn. Over the past five years, the foundation has awarded students a total of $75,500 in scholarships.

American 1 Federal Credit Union, Jackson, Mich. awarded 10 area high school graduates with $1,000 scholarships. All 10 students were highly involved in extra curricular activities and their community. Each student also wrote an essay on the benefits of altruism and how they improved their community through service. The scholarships were funded through American 1′s skip-a-pay program where members can skip one month's loan payment for a $25 donation. American 1 has rewarded high school seniors with scholarships since 2000.

Altura Credit Union, Riverside, Calif., awarded a total of $42,000 in scholarships this year. Each of 42 students were awarded an $1,000 scholarship. The total is $20,000 more than Altura awarded in scholarships in 2007. A record number of 327 students applied for scholarships this year. The scholarship program is funded by Altura members, $5 from the one-time $12 membership fee goes to the scholarship fund. Scholarship recipients were selected based on their academic record, extracurricular activities, financial need and an essay detailing their college goals. This year, 38 general scholarships were awarded and four memorial scholarship were awarded.

LBS Financial Credit Union, Long Beach, Calif., awarded scholarships to 30 students in Long Beach, Lakewood, Cerritos and surrounding communities. This year, 26 high schools, two college and two adults' school students were awarded scholarships.

Keys Federal Credit Union, Key West, Fla., awarded an $8,000 scholarship each to three members. Max Disser was the recipient of the 2008 Keys Federal Credit Union Emily Moore scholarship for the upper Keys. Disser is attending Florida State University and is majoring in business administration and marketing. Kathleen Greenman was awarded the scholarship for the middle Keys. Greenman is attending Tufts University and studying international relations. Allyson Sweet was awarded the scholarship for the lower Keys. Sweet is attending the University of Florida and is majoring in economics and political science. The scholarship program was initiated by Emily Moore during her tenure as a member of the board of directors. After Moore's passing in 2004 the scholarship program was named after her in her honor.

EECU, Jackson, Mich., announced that its 2008 college scholarships were awarded to Katie Dysert and Abba Jackman. Each received a $1,000 scholarship. Dysert is attending Spring Arbor University and is studying psychology. Jackman is attending Baker College of Jackson and is studying accounting.

Southern Select Community Credit Union, Kannapolis, N.C., awarded its 2008 scholarship to Eden S. Lipe. Lipe was a home-schooled student through the Footprints Academy and is attending Rowan-Cabarrus Community College to study nursing. Lipe has also studied piano and dance and is involved in the 4-H club locally and at the county level. She served on the Mayor's Youth Council and has volunteered with her church and numerous community organizations.

MCT Federal Credit Union, Rockville, Md., awarded four members a $1,500 scholarship through the annual Bill Teel memorial scholarship program and one family member of an MCT employee, Kristin Del Balzo, was additionally awarded a $1,500 scholarship. Shawn McNally, Marcela Santos, Uchenna Emeche and Benjamin Schanker were awarded the Bill Teel memorial scholarships. Over 125 members applied for the scholarships. The scholarships was created in memory of a former MCT employee who was employed between the 1970s and 1980s and helped bring innovative technology to the organization.

Bay Federal Credit Union, Capitola, Calif., awarded six students from California Central Coast high schools scholarships as an extension of its Youth Financial Education program. Each recipient received a $500 scholarship. The recipients were, Christina Alberti, Jared Milhous, Lilia Serrano, Michael Dias, Branden Karleen and Emily Morelli. The recipients won based on their winning essays on the topic "What can you or your credit union do to encourage today's youth to join and take advantage of credit union products and services."
