MADISON, Wis. — The Credit Union Executives Society has recently named Carolina Postal Credit Union Vice President Marketing/Business Development Deb McLean as a 2008 CUES future leader.

CUES future leader nominees are evaluated on their accomplishments within their credit union and the movement as a whole; contributions made to CUES and its councils; level of professional development and education; a letter of recommendation from his or her CEO; and community contributions. Additionally, the judges reviewed the details of a single problem-solving plan which was developed, led and put into action by the nominee.

McLean was honored for the credit union's priority payday checking program, which gives members access to their paychecks sooner rather than waiting for them to clear on Fridays.

The traditional payday Friday is inconvenient for postal workers because it is their busiest day. Allowing them to transact payroll business on Wednesday is a real convenience that helped set the credit union apart from other financial institutions. The program began in May 2007 and by the end of the first month had generated an increase of $1 million in core deposits. The number of new checking accounts has continued to double each month (compared to 2006 numbers).

"CUES commends Deb McLean for the passion and commitment she brings to the credit union movement. As a new executive at Carolina Postal, she initiated an innovative program that targeted the immediate needs of members. The priority payday checking program she conceived has led to a surge in new accounts," said CUES President/CEO Fred Johnson.

McLean has worked in the credit union movement since 1987 and joined CUES the same year. She was named CUES marketer of the year in 2002. An active member in CUES' North Carolina Council, McLean has served in a number of leadership roles, including vice chair in 2004-2005. In 2006, she was inducted into CUES Rising 100. McLean joined Carolina Postal in March 2007, where she also coordinated the statewide Operation CU troop, collecting personal items for troops overseas.

"In just a few short months with Carolina Postal Credit Union, Deb has managed to roll out the following programs: priority payday checking, bounceback checking, switch and ditch auto loan promotion and the 'I love my Hoopty' loan program," said Carolina Postal President/CEO Joy R. Watts. "We feel honored to have a CUES future leader on our staff."

McLean will receive the CUES Future Leader Award at CEO Network 2008, Nov. 2-5 at the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas.
