FARMERS BRANCH, Texas — Disaster relief donations for employee victims of Hurricane Ike have now soared past $250,000, the two major industry agencies collecting the funds reported Thursday.
For its part, the Texas Credit Union Foundation said it has now received more than $155,000 in its Disaster Relief Fund and of that amount has already processed 289 applications issuing checks for $140,000.
In Washington, the National Credit Union Foundation, which is collecting Ike contributions nationally from trade groups, individual CUs and vendors, said it is heartened by the industry's outpouring with collections topping $100,000 through its online CUAid link, www.cuaid.coop.

"The $100.000 is the second largest outpouring raised through CUAid and that's been done in two weeks from 45 states," said Steve Bosack, NCUF deputy director. More than $230,000 was raised last year on behalf of employee victims of the California wildfires over an eight month period.
Separately, the Iowa Credit Union Foundation, cooperation with NCUF, raised more than $500,000 for victims of the June flooding along Iowa river cities.
The Texas Foundation said it was encouraging CUs "to engage their employees, members and community in the fundraising effort" by posting the CUAid link on Web sites.
"This online donation tool can be used by members and credit union employees to make secure online donations to the disaster relief fund. As with credit union donations, 100% of the donations go directly to credit union disaster victims," said TCIF.
