FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — CUNA's Homes for Our Troops charity venture, spawned this summer at the Presidential conventions to support wounded veterans of the Iraqi and Afghanistan wars, is on track for a Missouri expansion with two new homes to be built by credit unions.

Planners hope that once some $200,000 is raised in separate CU-run campaigns, the first two specially-fitted homes could be erected and handed over to pre-selected war vets by year-end at this U.S, Army base here and at another near St. Louis.

"With so many of our members in the military, we could not think a more ideal project to demonstrate support for our troops," explained Brent Sadler, chief operating officer of the $134 million Mid Missouri CU, which together with Annheuser-Busch Employees CU in St. Louis have taken the lead in promoting Missouri 'Homes for Troops,'

Underscoring what Sadler says is a "jump start" for the project, the Mid-Missouri executive spoke on the 'Homes' campaign during a talk at the Missouri Credit Union Association's annual meeting in Lake of the Ozarks last week.

With an expectation that more Missouri CUs will support 'Homes for Troops,' "Rosie Holub is committing the required $100,000 on behalf of MCUA to help make the guarantee," said Sadler, making reference to MCUA's association president/CEO.
