FARMERS BRANCH, Texas — The Texas Credit Union League said Monday the scope of destruction from Hurricane Ike on vast areas of the Texas coast has made the job of assessing damage and property loss to CU employees and members a massive undertaking.

With millions of Texans still without power or clean drinking water and areas still under evacuation orders, the task of determining damage assessment is daunting, said a league message distributed to the media.

"As I'm sure you're aware, Hurricane Ike left a trail of heavy flooding, collapsed buildings and roadways filled with debris," said a league statement which also contained a "desperate" appeal for help by president/CEO Richard Ensweiler directing CUs across the nation to the National Credit Union Foundation's CUAid program, www.CUAid.coop, or the league's own foundation disaster relief fund, https://www.tcul.coop/CU_Hurricane_Ike_Conditions.html.

"Our hearts go out to the millions of displaced families, scattered in shelters across the state, and uncertain of what they will return to," wrote Ensweiler. "As disaster recovery efforts get underway, the credit union community too is positioning
itself to respond to the needs of our credit unions, and of course their employees, in the affected area."

"Already we have received phone calls and emails from credit unions and leagues across the country pledging their support," he said. "Your help is desperately needed and I can assure you, deeply appreciated."
