MADISON, Wis. — Although fewer of them make it into the mainstream media, the pace of card security data breaches continues at a rapid clip, according to CUNA Mutual Group.
Christopher Roe, CUNA Mutual's Senior Vice President for Corporate and Legal Affairs and John Christenson, CUNA Mutual's Associate General Counsel, estimated the current industry focus on widespread implementation of card data standards are making a dent in card vulnerability among the larger merchants but that more small and medium sized merchants still have large card data theft risks.
Eight other states besides California had data breach related legislation on their legislative calendars this year. All failed for various reasons except for two. In Iowa and Maine legislators passed and sent their Governors bills, which they signed, that mandated the states study the card data breach issue and report back in 2009.
