JACKSON, Miss. — The $64 million Hope Community Credit Union and its sponsor, the Enterprise Corp. of the Delta, reported having helped thousands of Mississippi and Louisiana residents put their lives back together after Hurricane Katrina.

In an August 29 letter to its supporters, timed to coordinate with the third anniversary of the deadly 2005 storm, the credit union thanked its supporters for helping keep more than 7,500 low- and moderate-income households out of the hand of unscrupulous contractors and to access more than $500 million in federal grants.

The CU also helped 4,000 residents in the impacted area open up accounts which they used to receive funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, insurance companies and grant makers. Over 600 small businesses also received help from Hope Community, reported Bill Bynum, the CEO of Hope and ECD.
