AmeriCU Credit Union, Rome, N.Y., presented a check for $8,500 to the Warriors in Transition Unit at Fort Drum. AmeriCU staff raised the funds by hosting raffles, selling hot dogs, displaying fish bowl donation drops in the branches and offering a skip-a-pay program and receiving a grant of $1,500 by the Armed Forces Network. The funds will be used to assist the needs of the wounded soldiers on Fort Drum.
Quincy Credit Union, Quincy, Mass., participated in the eighth annual children's book drive in conjunction with the Massachusetts Credit Union League and Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. New and used books were collected through the donations of Quincy members and staff. The books will be distributed to Cradles to Crayons in Quincy to benefit local children. Last year, the Massachusetts Credit Union League and 47 credit unions participated in the drive and distributed 20,570 books to nonprofit agencies.
United Educational Credit Union, Battle Creek, Mich. awarded a $400 Bright Ideas Partnership grant to Bellevue Elementary School for a project to enhance student performance in the writing arena. The grant was applied for by teacher Shannon Graves in order to identify students struggling in writing and provide supplemental writing services to those students. The project also seeks to raise student writing scores and increase student aptitude toward writing and create an awareness of the intricacies of writing for various purposes.

Andrews Federal Credit Union, Suitland, Md., serves as a sponsor of the annual March for Babies event. For the past five years, Andrews Federal has raised over $5,000 in member and staff contributions for the March of Dimes. This year, due to pledges, branch fundraising and sponsorships, the amount donated tripled to almost $15,000. Andrews Federal provided 20 walkers and volunteers for the March for Babies event and handed out give-a-ways and water.
Bay Federal Credit Union, Capitola, Calif., was the top fundraiser at the annual 10k AIDS walk from the Santa Cruz wharf to Natural Bridges. Twenty employees from Bay Federal secured pledges of $2,700 and walked the course. An additional 25 employees donated $1,000. The top individual fundraiser on the Bay Federal team was Cinthia Macias from ATM deposit services who raised $297 in pledges. Elisha Fenwick from Bay Federal site services was runner up with pledges worth $295.
First New York Federal Credit Union, Schenectady, N.Y., raised $283 for the Animal Protective Foundation. Employees enjoyed a dress-down day to raise the funds. The funds are part of a campaign that employees have been participating in since 1994. Every month, a different local, nonprofit organization is chosen, and for one day, employees give a donation toward that organization and get to dress down for that day. In addition, a fishbowl is placed in the branch lobbies for member donations. The Animal Protective Foundation was founded by a group of volunteers led by Jesse Carpenter and was incorporated as the Animal Protective Foundation of Schenectady Inc. in 1931. It was established to provide care and protection to domestic animals and was first operated out of a garage. Today, it shelters stray dogs from several municipalities, including the City of Schenectady, and accepts stray cats and owned animals from throughout Schenectady County.
MidSouth Federal Credit Union, Macon, Ga., presented a donation check to Central High School's director of bands. The donation was made to aide in the purchase of new marching band uniforms.
