MADISON, Wis. — CUNA Mutual Group has hired a new member to its team to help build successful retirement plans.

Seth Friedman has been hired as the new regional sales director-retirement plans for the eastern United States. Friedman joins CUNA Mutual Group from Nationwide Financial. He led the company's northeast division for it bank channel.

"Seth Friedman is an important addition to our world-class sales team," said Micah DiSalvo, CUNA Mutual's director of retirement plan sales. "He brings an extensive background in wholesaling, training, product expertise and leadership, which will benefit our clients and our staff."

Over the past six months, CUNA Mutual has expanded its retirement plan business by adding financial advisers with several broker-dealers and building a sales and distribution organization to support that effort. It has added Ken Boivin as the regional sales director for the western United States, Brian Corsi as regional sales associate for the western United States and Mark Couillard as regional sales associate for the eastern United States.

Alabama CU's Clear Card Wins Award

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A see-through card designed by Harland Clarke for the Alabama State Employees Credit Union's has won a top honor from the International Card Manufacturers Association.

The Elan Award for Best Secure Financial Card was presented to the card's designer, Harland Clarke, and is printed in partnership with Oberthur Technologies Corp. of America.

The ClearCheck Card is intended to be a cornerstone of the credit union's ClearChecking program and was designed to appeal to the 24-35 age market, although it has proven to have broader appeal, the CU said.

In the first two weeks after the card was introduced, new checking accounts increased by more than 300%, according to Barry Mask, marketing director at the $144 million, 27,000-member CU (www.asecu.org).

The card beat out finalists Citibank and Banco de Popular de Puerto Rico in its category.
