WASHINGTON — When the heads of 17 trade associations met Wednesday with top Senate Democrats to discuss political and legislative priorities, the credit unions were not represented.
That's because CUNA President Dan Mica was in Hong Kong at the World Council of Credit Unions meeting. CUNA asked if it Mica's invitation was transferable to CUNA Chief of Staff Richard McBride but was told only CEOs were allowed.
NAFCU President Fred Becker was with his daughter who was having surgery at the time of the meeting.

The credit unions' rival, the Independent Community Bankers of America, attended the meeting.
At the session, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) and other top Democrats discussed strategic issues and the association leaders' legislative wish lists.
The Democrats used the meeting, to cement relations with business-related trade associations, some of which have tended to work more closely with Republicans.
Both CUNA and NAFCU are careful to forge alliances on both sides of the aisle.
