Sandia Area Federal Credit Union, Albuquerque, N.M., announced that $3,500 has been awarded to five contest winners in the 2008 Richard L. Rogers memorial scholarship essay contest. The winners were: Jordan Tucker for $1,000, Colleen Lanza for $750, Robert Wiebelhaus for $750, Lillian Murphy-Wix for $500 and Claire Stewart for $500. The winning students will have their scholarship funds forwarded to the college or university in which they are enrolled for the 2008 fall semester. Applicants were asked to write a 1,000-word essay describing what they considered to be an important societal or community issue and why and a strategic plan to resolve that issue. Professors from the University of New Mexico English Department judged the essays and gave mention to the outstanding work provided by each entrant. Along with the essay, detailed scholastic achievements and letters of recommendation were also considered.

First Capital Federal Credit Union, York, Pa., announced the recipient of its 2008 college scholarship. Jami Myers was the winner of the $500 scholarship.

Myers is a student at Dallastown Area High School and will enter Shippensburg University this summer. Myers will pursue a degree in elementary education. Myers is active in the school's marching band and swim team. She is also an active member in her church and youth group and volunteers at a local soup kitchen, collects canned goods for the homeless and has built homes with Habitat for Humanity.

SELCO Community Credit Union, Eugene, Ore., has named 16 students recipients of its scholarship award for 2008. The high school seniors were each awarded $1,500 for their combination of scholastic achievement and community involvement. The recipients were: Ahren Baesler, Allison Coughlin, Charvey Dejanakul, Cameron Dixon, Derek Duman, Melissa Hale, Libby Heintz, Casey King, Lindsey Leighton, Danielle Ragan, Zachary Roberts, Belen Rodriguez, Lindsay Smith, Chase Thomet, Blake Weber and Trini Wilson. In order to qualify for the scholarship students had to have a minimum GPA of 3.5, submit an essay and letters of recommendation and describe their extracurricular and community-involvement activities.

Truliant Federal Credit Union, Winston-Salem, N.C., awarded 11 scholarships totaling $15,000 to their member-owners through the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation scholarship program. Truliant established the Sarda scholarship in 1996 to honor Fred J. Sarda, a founding member of the credit union. The five recipients of the Sarda scholarship were: Steven Langerman, Emily Griffin, Jonathan Crocker, Bryan Shoffner and Aaron Dancy. The Telephone Pioneers Club scholarship is awarded each year to three Truliant members with a relative who worked or is currently working for AT&T or Lucent Technologies in the Winton-Salem area. The recipients were: Laura Mayerchak, Kyrie Joyce and Kaitlyn Cranford. The CCUF awarded two scholarships from its general fund to Joshua Wynn and Christa Carter. The Clyde Padgett scholarship, which provides funds to help employees, volunteers and their families continue their education, went to Joseph Whitaker III.

Eaton Family Credit Union, Euclid, Ohio, announced the recipients of two $1,000 college scholarships. Neal Evers and Michael Trueman were the two recipients. Evers attended Villa Angela Saint Joseph High School in Cleveland. Evers will enroll at the University of Dayton in the fall to study accounting. Evers is also a scholar athlete award winner in football. Trueman also attended Villa Angela Saint Joseph High School. He will attend Ohio University in the fall and plans on studying business management with the goal of owning a restaurant.
