DES MOINES, Iowa — Donations from the U.S. credit union community to aid CU flood victims in Iowa have now surpassed $322,000, topping industry contributions received for those who suffered losses in last fall's California wildfires, it was reported Tuesday.
“I want to personally thank the credit union community for its significant generosity in this time of need,” said Pat Jury, president/CEO of the Iowa Credit Union League.
The funds have been primarily collected on-line through the Iowa Credit Union Foundation and the CUAid program of the National Credit Union Foundation, said league officials.
Jury called the donations “an incredible outpouring of financial support,” with the money used to CU members affected by last month's floods.
The first $500 checks as emergency aid will be distributed this week by the foundation, said a spokeswoman. “The Foundation's Disaster Relief Grant Committee met last Friday to review the grant applications and will begin disbursing grants this week,” she said.
