Landmark Credit Union, New Berlin, Wis., raised $22,783 for Children's Hospital by selling $1 links and $10 hearts during their Credit Unions For Kids Chain of Hearts campaign. The total raised is a 20% increase over the amount raised in last year's campaign. Last year, credit unions in the state of Wisconsin raised over $348,000 for the Children's Miracle Network campaign.
United Educational Credit Union, Battle Creek, Mich., awarded a $400 Bright Ideas Partnership grant to Bellevue Community Schools for K-12 physical education program. The grant was applied for by physical education teacher, Shelley Morgan for the purchase of pedometers. The pedometers will be implemented at the elementary level to help ensure students become healthy and active adults.
Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, Phoenix, raised $220,000 for Phoenix Children's Hospital. The funds were raised in conjunction with business partners and sponsors of the 10th Annual Desert Schools Children's Miracle Network Golf Tournament. The proceeds from the tournament went directly to benefit the 1 Darn Cool School, which is an on-site classroom facility that benefits long-term patients at Phoenix Children's Hospital.
Financial 21 Community Credit Union, San Diego, presented Daniel and Francie Barrios with a grant check for $10,000 from the National Credit Union Foundation Disaster Relief Fund. The Barrios' had only ten minutes to evacuate their home before it was destroyed by a fire. They have been members of Financial 21 for 36 years will be moving back into their new rebuilt home in the next few months.
Hanscom Federal Credit Union, Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., was the primary sponsor for the Electronic Systems Center annual awards dinner. The dinner saluted both military and civilian contributions to the Air Force projects that ESC manages at its Hanscom Air Force Base headquarters. Hanscom also sponsored the 66th Air Base Wing Awards dinner, which celebrates those responsible for every detail of the base's daily operations.
Seven Seventeen Credit Union, Warren, Ohio, presented Akron Children's Hospital with a check for $776. Seven Seventeen surveyed a cross section of its membership in an effort to enhance member service. For each survey returned, Seven Seventeen donated $1 to Akron Children's Boardman Campus through the children's Miracle Network. Akron Children's Hospital is a not-for-profit organization and no child is ever denied care of access. Seven Seventeen's donation will be used to benefit the Boardman Campus in order to pay for equipment, services and programs to assist children and their families.
Security Service Federal Credit Union, San Antonio, and Y100 Radio held their 19th annual make-a-wish penny drive that set a new record in funds collected. The drive raised over $67,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation through a live, two-day radio-a-thon held at Ingram Park Mall and through donations collected at all Security Service locations in the San Antonio area. Thanks to the drive 13 Central and South Texas children living with life threatening medical conditions will have their wishes granted.
Credit Union of Southern California, Whittier, Calif., hosted the Southern California's Helping Hands and Heart of Compassion fourth annual food distribution day at the Whittier branch. The branch was closed for the event and more than 2,000 people were given lunch while they waited for groceries. Games and coloring sheets were provided for kids that were waiting for their parents. More than 50,000 pounds of food valued at $100,000 was donated to local residents during the all day event.
AmeriCU Credit Union, Rome, N.Y., presented a donation check for $8,500 to the Warriors in Transition Unit on Fort Drum. AmeriCU raised the funds by hosting raffles, selling hot dogs, displaying fish bowl donation drops in the branches, offering a skip-a-pay program and receiving a grant of $1,500 by the Armed Forces Network. The funds will be used to assist the needs of wounded soldiers on Fort Drum.
