South Division Credit Union, Evergreen Park, Ill., is hosting a free community shred event on June 26. South Division is encouraging members to bring in up to three banker's size boxes of unwanted personal documents to shred. Also, as part of the statewide credit union consumer education drive I Belong South Division will distribute information about protection from identity theft. One family will also win a free heavy-duty home shredder.

Retail Employees Credit Union, Atlanta, teamed up with its Macy's members to volunteer at the Atlanta Food Bank. Volunteers were in charge of inspecting food and verifying expiration dates. The food collected is distributed to homeless shelters, churches and individuals of modest means.

GFA Federal Credit Union, Gardner, Mass., held a color contest through its school-banking program for National Credit Union Youth Week and has displayed all of the winning pictures at the Gardner locations. The theme for the contest was Got Green? Grow it at GFA! and the contest asked students to color a picture showing what they wanted to grow their savings for. Each student who colored a picture was given a special packet of money tree seeds. The students submitting the best drawings from each school were given a $2 bill and $2 was deposited in their account. Gilberto Cuevas of Gardner colored the grand prize winning picture and was awarded $1,000 Savings Bond. His picture said I want to grow my savings because: I want to be a teacher when I grow up.
