NEW YORK — The former chair of the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions has been honored by a think tank that has taken on a leading role in the effort to promote thrift.
The Institute for American Values honored former Federation Chair Rita L. Haynes, CEO of the Faith Community United Credit Union, Cleveland, with its New Thrift award at a recent thrift conference.
In accepting the award, Haynes remarked, "If all us work together and attack the enemy, which is greed, we can together do all things." Federation board member and Mississippi State Sen. Robert L. Jackson was a panelist at the conference, as well.

David Blankenhorn, president/CEO of the Institute for American Values, described the alliance with credit unions and the federation as "a valuable opportunity to connect top scholars with pioneering credit union leaders from across the country. I look forward to continuing this creative partnership in the months ahead."
"We were especially pleased with the report's policy recommendations," said federation Executive Director Clifford Rosenthal.
The institute supported additional funding for community development financial institutions, one of the Federation's key initiatives, and supported credit union innovation and expansion.
Several of the federation's members, North Side Community FCU, Chicago; Faith Community United CU, Cleveland; and ASI FCU, New Orleans, along with Community Development Partner State Employees' CU of North Carolina, were cited for their exemplary work in developing alternatives to payday loans, as was Prospera CU, Appleton, Wis.
Power Financial CU Offers Pet Microchips
MIAMI — Power Financial Credit Union reached out to pet lovers in the community by inviting members and nonmembers to come to the credit union for a free microchip.
One free microchip per household was offered to the first 50 credit union members and nonmembers were invited to open accounts to receive a microchip.
"Power Financial Credit Union has been serving the needs of South Florida families for more than 50 years," said Allan M. Prindle, president/CEO. "Since pets are an important part of many families, we are providing this service as a courtesy to our neighbors.' Experts say that when a crisis arises, such as a hurricane, having the microchip in your pet will help ensure a safe return."
The Humane Society of Broward County was also on hand offering dogs and cats for adoptions.
Ohio Nurses Association Honors CU CEO
DUBLIN, Ohio — Ohio HealthCare Federal Credit Union CEO Bill Butler was recently awarded a 2008 nurses choice award in the best individual category during the Ohio Nurses Foundation awards and scholarship event.
"Financial stability is vital for our future well-being. Bill Butler's efforts with our organization are beginning steps in securing our financial future," said Ohio Nurses Association member Margaret Burns who nominated Butler for the award.
Ohio HealthCare Federal Credit Union has been a lead sponsor for the Ohio Nurses Association for three years. The credit union's sponsorship provides scholarships to individ-
uals returning to school to pursue nursing.
