United Educational Credit Union, Battle Creek, Mich., awarded a $400 Bright Ideas Partnership grant to Max Larsen Elementary School. The grant was in support of the fourth and fifth grader's production of "The Jungle Book." The grant was applied for by teacher Steve Ellis. The production was a collaborative effort between three teachers and several local theatre professionals.
Point West Credit Union, Portland, Ore., raised over $9,000 for Credit Unions for Kids in Children's Miracle Network in the past eight months. Point West staff and members helped raise the money by selling candy bars, hosting fundraising dinners and events and selling raffle tickets for items such as gift baskets, flat screen televisions and barbeques.
Pacific Service Credit Union, Walnut Creek, Calif., announced that is has funded the KING Leadership program at the Fresno Police Activities League. KING Leadership is a program for children living in high-crime areas that mentors them on the importance of good behavior and positive choices. The children also work together to clean up low-income Fresno neighborhoods.

American 1 Federal Credit Union, Jackson, Mich., waived its normal 7% coin machine usage fee for Jackson's Kidder Middle School. The school's sixth, seventh and eight graders collected change over a one-week period to donate to Jackson's Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Classes competed in small games and activities to see who could bring in the most change. Each year, the kids raise enough money to sponsor a team at the Relay for Life event on August 1 at Jackson's Cascades Park. The money raised at Relay for Life will help fund the American Cancer Societies scholarship fund and Jackson's Camp Catch-a-Rainbow where children between four and fifteen years old who are being treated for cancer or who are in remission from cancer can enjoy five days of fun activities at the YMCA Storer Camps. The middle school as a whole collected more than 4,600 pennies, 2,600 nickels, 2,800 dimes, 1,100 quarters and several dollars and personal checks. All together it totaled more than $1,300 with $1,247.49 coming from change alone. American 1 saved them about $90 by waiving the usage fee.
Desert Schools Federal Credit Union, Phoenix, helped raise nearly $50,000 in pledge contributions in just one night for local PBS station, KAET-TV Eight. Jason Myers, Desert marketing and public relations director, organized the event and served as on-camera challenge grant spokesperson. The show aired live from the PBS studio on the campus of Arizona State University.
MidSouth Federal Credit Union, Warner Robins, Ga., presented a donation to the president of the Houston County Habitat for Humanity, Kathy Cripe. The donation assisted in the sponsoring of Houston County Habitat for Humanity's sixth annual golf tournament.
Fremont Federal Credit Union, Fremont, Ohio, donated a $125,000 gift to Investment in the Future, the major gift campaign at Terra Community College. Terra, along with other two-year colleges, will push for 230,000 additional students to participate in higher education in the next decade, an initiative of Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland.
North Jersey Federal Credit Union, Totowa, N.J., will hold two separate fundraisers for the March of Dimes. The baby footprint card fundraiser requests members and employees to donate $3 and sign a card that will be put on display in NJFCU's lobby. The second fundraiser, blue jeans for babies requests employees to donated $5 to wear blue jeans to work on a designated Friday. This is the third year that NJFCU has assisted March of Dimes.
Kent Credit Union, Kent, Ohio, held the second annual KCU drive to benefit animals at the Portage Animal Protective League. Employees Kathy Oostdyk and Connie Edwards spearheaded the event. The staff in Kent's four locations partnered with members to make donations of much-needed items or cash to be used for the survival of PAPL animals. The drive received many items such as dog and cat food, kitty litter, blankets, rugs, leashes, collars, paper towels, latex gloves, toys, cleaning supplies and over $400 in cash. The PAPL shelters finds safe homes for sick, injured abused and abandoned domestic animals that are in need of help.
