JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A carpet cleaning company was among the first to go live with a virtual deposit merchant system through Florida Telco Credit Union and Southeast Corporate Credit Union.
The remote deposit service allows members to make deposits to their credit union account right from their desktop without having to leave their office. Business members can scan their checks for deposit at their place of business, which are then transmitted through Southeast's Web-based product.
In April, Florida Telco became the first credit union to pilot Southeast Corporate's merchant capture product with its business members. David Marovich, business account officer at the $450 million credit union, said a check scanner was installed at the carpet cleaning company's headquarters. The new deposit arrangement now eliminates daily, 20-mile round trip drives to make deposits for the owner, who drives a Ford Expedition, he added. A medical company has also expressed interest in merchant capture.

"The three women who run the company are excited about the safety that merchant capture will offer them since they won't even have to leave the office to make deposits," Marovich said. "And we've already seen how the product helps members who are not located near a branch."
