Columbia Credit Union, Washougal, Wash., made donations to Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge and Washougal Parks to celebrate the opening of its green Washougal branch on Aril 22. President/CEO Parker Cann presented the checks to aid in the funding of education programs for Steigerwald and to help finance improvements at Hathaway Park. The branch is built to LEED standards and is open for the community to tour, meet the staff, and learn about its unique sustainable features. The branch uses natural resources such as rainwater, sunlight, and natural ventilation to reduce its environmental impact. Rain is harvested to serve plumbing and irrigation needs, and natural ventilation will cool the branch during the warmer months. A skylight and high-efficiency HVAC system reduces electricity needs. The branch also features local Camas stone and lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council for environmentally responsible harvesting methods. The construction process on the branch was monitored to ensure that sustainable products were used, and materials and waste were tracked to verify they were handled in an environmentally responsible manner. As a result at least 75% of construction waste was diverted from landfills.
