LATHAM, N.Y. - Future meetings of the New York Credit Union League may have a slightly more Spanish accent now that the League has opened itself to associate memberships from Puerto Rican CUs.

The first Puerto Rican credit union has joined the League as an associate member, culminating an effort to further cooperation between credit unions on the island and in New York State which began in August 2005. The Abraham Rosa Cooperativa is the first Puerto Rican credit union to take advantage of the opportunity which was fostered in part by the World Council of Credit Unions.

As associate members, the Puerto Rican credit unions will have all the rights and abilities of members short of sitting on the board and the ability to vote, according to League General Counsel Mike Lanotte. In particular they will have access to league compliance resources.
