WICHITA, Kan. — The Kansas Credit Union Association said Friday it is launching starting in May a three-phase education program with its 88 state-chartered CUs to ensure they are well prepared for the start of the new field of membership/merger law which takes effect July 1.

The trade group said the first "overview" sessions would be held May 14-15 in Wichita and Lawrence with a Webinar followed up by a series of nine detailed compliance sessions held in sites across the state during June.

Later on in the summer would come further planning seminars to prepare application and public notice procedures on grandfathering aspects of the law which become effective Jan. 1, 1990.

"Our goal is to make sure our credit unions are comfortable with all the regulations," said Marla Marsh, the president/CEO of the KCUA speaking at the opening session of the organization's annual meeting held at the Wichita Marriott.

The new law puts a halt to wide scale statewide branching and ads new branch notice and application regulations. Also attending some of the KCUA education sessions will be John Smith, the administrator of the Department of Banking who told Credit Union Times he expected to hold more "extensive" planning sessions with nine CUs mostly in Topeka, Wichita and Kansas City most severely impacted by the FOM law.
