COLUMBIA, S.C. — In a first-time honor coinciding with a statewide program, the South Carolina Credit Union League has selected two of its members for a new "diversity in the workplace" award.
The winners of the fledgling Laura M. Fleming Diversity Awards presented at the League's annual conference last week and with announcement kept under wraps for weeks are: Family Trust FCU, Rock Hill, and South Carolina FCU, North Charleston.
"Between them, these two credit unions embody the complex nature of diversity as it relates to financial services," SCCUL President and CEO Garry L. Parks said. "Family Trust has taken particular interest in recognizing South Carolinians' diverse needs and conditions, while SC Federal has emphasized the value in having an organization that reflects and identifies with the citizens it serves."

The Fleming Award, said the league, was introduced this year by the organization's Diversity Committee, acknowledging a similar statewide effort by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and South Carolina Diversity Council. Named in memory of one of the Palmetto State's CU leaders and an original member of the Diversity Committee, the award "recognizes South Carolina credit unions or organizations that exemplify diversity in the workplace."
Family Trust was cited for its startup of a successful payday loan alternative and partnering with United Way while South Carolina FCU was recognized for its operation of a multi-cultural job and aid to the jobless.
