MEDFORD, Ore. — Rogue Federal Credit Union helped some 100 fifth-grade students from Jackson and Washington Elementary Schools run the mock city of BizTown.
With the credit union's $5,000 donation, the students were the first outside the Portland Metro to participate in BizTown.
"I wish we could send every local student to BizTown, the lessons gained there will carry through with the students for the rest of their lives. Life lessons and financial education are so important to us here at Rogue Federal because we truly want to see people succeed. BizTown will serve as the foundation for these children's future," said Rogue Federal Community Education/Outreach Coordinator Kerrie Davis.

While elementary students are not old enough to drive, work, vote or be the boss, Davis said the BizTown experience allows them to do everything from operate financial institutions, manage restaurants and write checks to run a community health center, be a reporter for a local TV station and vote for mayor. Prior to the trip, students received 18 hours of classroom curriculum preparing them to run the city for a day. Students interviewed for jobs at the 19 BizTown businesses and learned skills specific to their job. Davis said the BizTown experience helped Medford fifth-grade students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world.
